The Vintage Pantry: Secret Garden, Galston

Be whisked away to a fairytale scene and enjoy the delicious coffee and dishes.

Set in the quaint little town of Galston, nestles The Vintage Pantry: Secret Garden. The Vintage Pantry, who opened Country Blossom (Pitt Town) in 2014, took over the Greenshades Restaurant in 2017 and reinvented it into Secret Garden. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with an outdoor leafy canopy that creates a secluded and whimsical atmosphere. The Secret Garden provides the options for quick takeaways, sit-down dining, and even functions for special events.

Although the restaurant was buzzing, there was no problem getting a table as there was seating both indoors, Hillsong music playing in the background, and in the spacious garden. There were families enjoying the sunshine outside while eating their lunches and children playing on the playground.

Food

There was an overwhelming amount of appealing options on the menu but my friend and I settled on the Greek platter for two. The platter came with a variety of skewers, pita bread, Greek salad, and chips. It didn’t quite fill us up, however, it left room for dessert. We opted for The Secret Garden and it was definitely a dish to eat with both our eyes and our mouths. It was made of a berry pannacotta covered in oreo crumbs and replicated a pot plant: a delicious pot plant.

Our coffees were brought by a rushed server who spilled some of the coffee but that did not change the great quality of our drinks. The servers were very friendly without being intrusive however they seemed to be very busy as one of the servers forgot to bring us plates to share. We also did not receive table water and our tables were not cleared for dessert.

Pros & Cons

The venue is absolutely beautiful with so much greenery around us and it allowed us to relax in the casual atmosphere. There were a lot of options on the menu and so there is something for everyone, however, it may be overwhelming if you were after something simple. The price is also on the higher end but it is worth the experience of dining in such a magical environment.

There is ample seating both inside and out: it is air conditioned inside for a comfortable temperature all year round and there is free wifi available. If you choose to sit outside in the gardens, you can also supervise your children playing in the gated playground. However, if you are outdoors you should be prepared for the flies that also love the beautiful garden and delicious foods. There is also a good range of dishes on the kids’ menu which can be also be coloured in as a fun activity!

Overall experience

The Secret Garden is not only a great place for the locals but a treat worth travelling for. You can sit down in both small and large groups, enjoy a single dish or share a large platter. The dessert was the highlight for me and I would love to go back and work my way through the menu!
