The Castle Hill Farmers & Fine Food Market, Castle Hill Showground

Come to support our Aussie farmers and local communities at this Farmers and Fine Food  Market.

Open every second and fourth Saturday 8am-12pm, this market not only has a wide range of fresh produce and meats but also handmade sweets and homeware goodies. This was the first time I had visited this market and it is definitely a place I would love to go again!

Location and Amenities

To get to this market you need to either drive to the Castle Hill Showground or catch a bus from Castle Hill Interchange. On Showground Rd there is a sign that directs you to the carpark and the market so be assured you won’t miss it! Within the market, there are toilets in the hall which holds its own large array of foods and produce. This market is pram friendly and welcomes friends and families to explore locally grown and made products.

Stalls

There is an exhaustive list of stalls on their official website but note that there is definitely something for everyone. My friend and I lined up for our morning coffee at one stall and went straight to another for our classic bacon and egg roll. We took our first stroll around the whole market to see what there was and decided to visit the cheese stall for some camembert cheese, buy beef and pork sausages at the meat stall, purchase freshly baked sourdough bread located inside the hall, and topped it off with two citrus plants to grow at home.

Pros and Cons

The market does not cover the whole showground but a small section which was quite convenient when going back and forth trying to compare two items. Prices are (sometimes) negotiable and it’s always exciting to engage in some friendly banter. You know where the profit is going to – it isn’t some big corporation but to our farmers and the local community.

Not every stall has an EFTPOS machine and I wasn’t able to spot an ATM around so make sure you bring cash. There weren’t many plastic bags available so remember to pack grocery bags as well. Although there were a lot of produce and meats, the food options were quite limited. From what I could see, there was a stall for bacon and egg roll, a gozleme, and dumpling stall.

Note: on their website they say not all stalls are open for both Saturdays per month.

Tip: Take some newspaper or some sort of seat cover if you are planning to buy large plants.

Overall Experience

It was my first farmers market experience and I loved it!! As it wasn’t a huge market I had enough energy by the end to enjoy the rest of my day. In saying that, I had to physically remove myself from the market or I would go completely over my budget for the week! The care and love each stall owner had for their products was something beautiful to witness and I would love to go again with friends and support our local farmers more.
