Enjoy a city bar in the Hills.
The Crooked Tailor is part of a small bar movement run by the owners of Pocket Group, Karl Schlothauer and Christophe Lehoux. Their other bars are Pocket Bar (Darlinghurst and Terrigal), Stitch Bar (York St, Sydney), and Button Bar (Surry Hills).
The atmosphere of Crooked Tailor is perfect for a cocktail bar with its unique and homely décor. Soft yellow light illuminates the bar, plants are hanging from the ceiling and walls, and there are both bar stools and booths for your comfort. There’s nothing flashy or gimmicky about the place and it oozes a sense of familiarity and sensibility. People are here to have a good time with their friends, not to get drunk on cheap booze. There are interesting and unique cocktails available, such as the “That One Time At Band Camp” which is essentially a boozy s’more.
There is an assortment of food available if you want to pop in for dinner or celebrate a special occasion.
My friends and I ordered the Hot and Numb Squid, Roast Cauliflower, Smoked Hot Wings, Juicy Mushroom Risotto, Torched Salmon, Really Good Fried Chicken, and the Dino Rib. The food came out in stages instead of all together, so we had to wait after eating one or two dishes. Despite the wait, the food was absolutely delicious. I was doubtful of the “Really Good” fried chicken as I have a lot of experience with fried chicken, but I was actually impressed and could say that it was indeed “really good”. I was also apprehensive of the Torched Salmon as I’ve been disappointed by a soggy salmon skin at other restaurants but this one was perfectly cooked. All the other dishes were spectacular, and we thoroughly enjoyed working our way through them.
Pros and Cons
While the food was delicious, the menu we were given was quite confusing as the food was separated into Bites, Small Shares, and Big Shares. We weren’t sure if we ordered enough or too much for our group as there were no indications as to the portion sizes. However, it seems like the menu has been changed since I went two weeks ago and online, the menu is now sorted into Bites, Garden, Land, Sea, and Happy Endings.
The prices were reasonable for the food quality, but my friends and I went for a cheaper second round of food at the McDonald’s around the corner.
My friends and I had a great time at the Crooked Tailor and we couldn’t stop talking about how good the food was. I loved the atmosphere and I love how local it is. It’s great to have such a trendy and high-quality bar without having to travel all the way to the city! I will definitely be back!
